Tomorrow, I'm taking some artwork to a new gallery in Lincoln, NH. Lincoln is in the White Mountains, one of our favorite hiking locations.
So I thought it would be fitting to chose this painting of Lonesome Lake, a beautiful secluded body of water in Franconia Notch. The Appalachian trail goes right alongside this lake.
I chose to do this sort of moody atmosphere, with light rain and mist hanging over the water and obscuring the hills in the distance. In this type of atmosphere, all the values are close, no big contrasts as on a sunny day. Also, there is an exaggeration of the atmospheric effect-objects will become much lighter in value and bluer in tone as they recede in distance, and in addition, edges will blur. Typical NH weather!!
